This event has concluded but you may watch the video below.
Abstract: Inuit are taking leadership in research, from community-based projects, to regional ethics boards and research processes, to new efforts in research self-determination, like the National Inuit Strategy on Research. For over fifteen years, the Ittaq Heritage and Research Centre in Kangiqtugaapik (Clyde River), Nunavut, has been putting much of this work into action. Ittaq works in Inuit design and leadership in four main areas – research, multi-media, land programming, and heritage activities. This presentation will provide an overview of Ittaq including its development, focus on a strengths- based approach, major projects and programs, and how it uses research to support community development, community wellness, and build Inuit-centred economy. The current global pandemic has highlighted even more the need and benefits to building research independence in communities across the North. Ittaq’s experience shows how this can and does work in one Nunavut community. We will share examples and a range of lessons that we hope are useful to other communities, as well as researchers, educators, and practitioners from diverse disciplines.
