Title: What are you made of and why should you care?: Nutrition and Body Composition

Lecture description: Abnormalities in body composition such as low muscle mass and high body fat are prevalent and important predictors of health. Dr. Prado’s research shows the need for including these measures of body composition in nutritional assessments of individuals. This lecture will discuss the importance of muscle mass and how food and nutrition can be optimized to prevent/reverse its loss.

(CAIP) Chair in Nutrition, Food and Health
Director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit

Dr. Carla Prado, PhD, RD is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, and a Campus Alberta Innovates (CAIP) Chair in Nutrition, Food and Health. She is also the Director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit. Dr. Prado is an expert in assessing nutritional status through the precise measurement of body composition and energy metabolism. The focus of her current research program is to develop targeted nutrition interventions for the prevention and treatment of low muscle mass in patients with diverse chronic conditions. Dr. Prado is a recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Award, an award that celebrates exceptional young Canadian leaders.
