Abstract:
This paper studies the use of a futures market as a mechanism for managing overfishing from a common pool. I provide conditions under which Cournot duopolists can use the futures market for fish in a subsequent season to coordinate their harvesting actions in the current season, thereby preserving a sustainable level of fish stock.
