MSc with Dr. Andreas Hermann
Thesis Topic: Developing gridded climate data using neural networks: high-resolution historical climate
and future projections for Africa.
Abstract:
This thesis contributes a comprehensive high-resolution database of historical and future climate
data for Africa. The database has been developed with a new methodological approach to
interpolation that uses deep neural networks to associate local climate patterns with topographic
and geographic variables, such as distance to water bodies, windward and leeward exposure of
mountain slopes, and topographic position indices. The database is made accessible through the
ClimateAF software (http://tinyurl.com/ClimateAF), allowing non-expert users to access more
than 20,000 climate grids, comprising 80 climate variables for 142 historical time periods (years,
decades, normals from 1901-2020), and for 168 future projections (CMIP6 model x scenario x
time combinations for the 2020s, 2050s and 2080s).
